The Red Envelope

How many times have you whined, in your lifetime, about how pathetic your red packet ‘intake’ is during the Lunar New Year festivities? How many times have you opened up the red packet from your parents, and felt “disappointed that there wasn’t more”?

Youths in our generation now seem to have forgotten the real meaning of giving and receiving red packets:

“The purpose of the red packet is that the red color of the packet symbolizes good luck. The cash amount contained within is not important but is required to be of an even number…”

Wikipedia

Red packets are blessings given by elders to unmarried friends and relatives. I think it would do us good to remember this and feel blessed each time we receive a red packet this Lunar New Year.

Albeit belated, here’s wishing all of you a Happy Lunar New Year!

  1. Of course people should feel blessed when they receive red packets. It’s just that you feel even more blessed when there are more “blessings” inside. 🙂

  2. … ORH.

  3. This blog took place a while ago, but whilst surfing the net, i came across this, and thought how very fitting! The topic is about Red Envelope/Packet aka Laisee…. as you’ve probably gathered i have a very strong connection with laisee… firstly, yes i am chinese, and secondly i have a gift shop, with the red envelope theme (www.redpacket.co.uk/www,.myredpacket.com). I strongly believe in the culture of laisee… and coming from an immediate family of 10 people ( and i am second youngest), i always look forward to receiving them!
